Ken Cockrel Jr. was an American politician, born on May 29, 1965, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of Ken Cockrel Sr., a Detroit City Council member, and Maryann Mahaffey, a former City Council President. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University in 1988, he worked as a journalist for The City News Bureau of Chicago and The Detroit News before entering politics. In 1997, he was elected to the Detroit City Council, where he served for 10 years. In 2008, he was appointed as interim mayor of Detroit after the resignation of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. He was the first African-American to hold the position since Coleman A. Young in 1993. However, he died in May 2009 due to a heart attack. Nevertheless, he was known for his dedication to public service and his advocacy for social justice and civil rights.
